As odd as this may seem, I often find myself searching around for movies that are deemed incredibly depressing to watch, simply because I enjoy making myself cry for no real reason at all. It has merely become a habit and is one I will not be breaking anytime soon. I've gathered together a list of my all time favourite (though miserable) movies and given a brief summary of why they are so heartbreaking. Bear in mind that this list is in no particular order otherwise I would not have placed The Mist first. "CONTAINS SPOILERS"

The Mist
The Mist

The very first time I watched this movie I flagged it as incredibly disturbing and horrific in a few scenes. One in particular took place midway through the movie whereby a group of townspeople gang up on an innocent military man who they believe released deadly, bloodthirsty creatures into the mist. Even though this poor man tries to defend himself and confirms he had nothing to do with his teams mission in producing a test product, the people brutally stab him without mercy multiple times in the stomach. Not only did that scene upset me to no end, it disgusted me when I realised there are people that sick and twisted out there in this world.

No matter how many times I watch this movie, it never fails to get me weeping like a newborn baby. It would be of course the most famous scene in the entire feature whereby the guards have to electrocute a miracle. It's that fact alone that gets everyone so worked up. Even though they are well aware that this man is innocent, they have no choice but to put him to death in accordance of state law. Can you imagine how difficult a job like this must be? Knowing that the man you are about to 'murder' is completely innocent and that perhaps you will never be forgiven for such a crime.

What Dreams May Come
What Dreams May Come

As soon as I saw this movie on television I rushed straight into the nearest store to claim it. The beauty of this movie is incredible and if you believe in the afterlife and heaven, this is definitely something you will love. Even though it's interpretation is out there and fantasy-like, it's without doubt one of the most tragic love stories ever told. If losing your two children in a fatal car crash isn't enough, losing your husband in another car crash not too long afterwards would utterly destroy you as it did one of the lead characters in this movie. This movie is all about a journey through the 'other world' with an urge to find your beloved through the depths of hell, with the hope of bringing them back into the more heavenly realm where you and other family members await.

A Walk To Remember
A Walk to Remember

I'd say this movie will give anyone who watches it an entirely new outlook on life and possibly make them change the way they are living theirs at the moment. It sure as hell gave me that impression the first time I watched it and I can surely say it's had me strict with what I will and will not do. This movie made me realise that no matter what obstacles you come across in life, you must not allow them to slow you down or put you off doing whatever you want to do. It also made me realise just how precious life can be. The ultimate sad moment in this movie, for me, was when one of the lead characters broke down in front of his father after being informed that he had paid all costs for his girlfriend to be treated at home rather than in a hospital. The connection at that exact moment between him and his father is truly beautiful and a huge tearjerker.

Meet Joe Black
Meet Joe Black

There is no way I could leave this one out due to it's immense story. Throughout the whole movie there is this constant blissful feeling of 'how is any of this going to work out in the end', right until it reaches the end. I have to admit that it's one of the most romantic movies I have ever had the pleasure of watching and each actor does a wonderful job at making it as real as possible, Brad and Anthony especially. The character I felt the emotions of the most however was the lead female. With her father being the head of a large company who make millions upon millions each and every day, she has the divine freedom to do as she pleases without any restrictions or so it seems. When her father catches wind of the fact that she and his new 'friend' have taken an interest in each other, he becomes irritated and gets angry with them both. After all, it's never going to be an easy road when you fall in love with death. The most depressing scene has to be the grand birthday party and onwards from there.

The Brave
The Brave [Region 2]

Even though Depp is my favourite actor this is in no way, shape or form a bias review. I just cannot leave this one off the list because it's too beautifil and tragic all rolled into one. If you have no seen this movie then I'd recommend it, especially if you're a Depp fan too. Perhaps you are a Marlon Brando fan in which case you should also know of this movie, or at least want to purchase it to have the pleasure of viewing how wonderful it is. Although the movie was not released in the states due to certain people believing they wouldn't profit from it, I won't waste my time going over how very wrong they were. This movie tells a story of one mans quest to saving the life of his family, even if it meant he would have to die in order to do so and that is exactly where it all ends up. You must watch it to follow the story, best of luck in doing so.

American History X
American History X

My favourite movie of all time has to be on this list somewhere and I'm sure most will agree with the sadness that oozes from this movie hours after it has ended. The cause of that sadness is more than likely due to the shocking ending and how heartbroken it leaves us as the credits begin to role after that spoken verse that is then embedded into our memories. We are not enemies but friends, we must not be enemies, though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature. Wherever I go these days you will find that I use that quote all the time, moreso as a tagline for any websites that I use. It's such a powerful quote, as is this movie in which it is featured. That last verse after the Nortons younger brother is killed lingers in our minds, forever engraved because of the tormenting scene before it. I would highly recommend this movie if you have not seen it, it is a must.

I Am Sam
I am Sam (New Line Platinum Series)

Ultimate tearjerker and a must see if you haven't already. Not only is the story beautifully and tragically told but the actors do a superb job throughout, especially Sean Penn. An autistic adult is somewhat pressured into agreeing that his young daughter should be adopted by a family who are able to give her what she needs. The older his daughter gets, the smarter she becomes, moreso than her father. After a long struggle in court to fight for the right to keep his daughter living with him, it all turns sour when his words backfire and he agrees that he cannot give her the proper upbringing she needs to develop further in life. I'd have to choose the saddest scene to be when they are forced apart whilst saying goodbye as neither want to let go of each other.

Pay It Forward

Pay It Forward

I first watched this movie in an english lesson a few years ago and it's one of those times when you find you just have to toughen up and not cry because there are other people around who will notice. That was surely one of those moments for me and it was more than a little difficult to control my tears toward the end of this movie. At first I had expected a boring and dull story until I noticed one of my favourite celebrities Jon Bon Jovi make an appearance, but then I realise he wasn't a very nice character. Then I got more and more into listening to a young Haley talk about the facts of life and what we can do to brighten up someones day, it could be anything at all that would make them happy. We are then led along the path he marks by simply improving the quality of life of one man who then does something special for another and it continues as such. Until the saddest scene in the movie at the very end. Once you have shed a few tears at the death scene, you are then forced to sit and weep at the neverending line of people leaving candles and flowers outside of the young boys home with the sound of  Calling All Angels playing in the background. Must see.

Because that movie is the last on my list I couldn't resist including the clip, enjoy:

I hope you agree with at least some of the above mentioned movies. No others come to mind right now but if you feel I could have added one or a few more in particular, let me know in the form of a comment below. If you are interested in purchasing any of the movies, clicking the image will redirect you to the product page via Amazon.
